In honour of World Water Day, Instructor Venetia gives us a few tips on hydration.

Ok, I don’t want to be mega dull and give you a bog standard fitnessy post on why you should drink 2-3 litres of water a day. You’ve read it a million times before.  So I thought i’d come at this from a slightly different angle.  You all know WHY you should drink so much water, but how many of us actually do it? Here are some of my top water guzzling tips to ensure I get those vital litres every day.

I could have a penny for every time a client says ‘I know I should drink two litres of water a day, but I can never quite seem to manage it’, I’d be a rich lady, let me tell you.  So, I’m just going to make 4 suggestions on how to guarantee those crucial litres.

Go to sleep with a pint of water by your bed, or in the bathroom. My mate Cameron Diaz swears by this method. As soon as you wake up, nail the water.
After a nights kip your body is hugely dehydrated (hence the morning breath) but as soon as you glug that water down everything starts to move, rehydrate and switch itself on…including your METABOLISM which means you can be a lean, mean, calorie burning machine from the minute you wake up.

Buy a small bottle of water on the way to work (500ml).
Make sure it’s just a little one so it doesn’t seem like an endless task to get through it. All you have to do is fill it up once before lunch, once after and once mid afternoon. Aren’t you always desperate to go for a wander around 11am or 4pm anyway?
The added bonus of the small bottle is that the water will stay cold and refreshing. If you buy a litre bottle it will be warm by the time you’re 3/4 of the way through, so you wont bother to finish it.

Did you know how often we mistake thirst for hunger? A lot my friends, let me tell you.
You know when you get that craving for a really juicy haribo? That’s dehydration. You’re craving getting your saliva glands working and drinking in all that sugary liquid when the sweetie starts to dissolve.
Or what about when you’re bored at your desk & go poking around the kitchen for snacks. Try taking a big gulp of water and you might just find that craving goes away.
You’re probably rolling your eyes right now, but, if you try it I bet you’ll end up surprising yourself.

If you find water really boring by itself add a couple of slices of lemon, or lime…or in fact any fruit. You can do strawberry, mint, cucumber, or a little selection. It’ll add to the goodness, and the flavour, and you’ll still imbibe your needed litres.

So there we go.  Easy as that.  Stay hydrated peeps.
